The Revelation of Jesus Christ
|
The word "revelation" means something that was hidden is now visible or
clear. This book makes Jesus Christ in glory visible. The revelation was from
God who gave it to Jesus. Then Jesus gave it to an angel who gave it to John the Apostle. John
wrote the Revelation in about 94 to 96 A.D. At that time in history, the ruler
of Rome was Emperor Domitian. When he wrote the Revelation, John was an old man. He was the last of the 12 apostles who was still alive. John was visiting the churches in Asia Minor. That is in the area that is now called Turkey. Paul had also visited those churches about 30 years before. When Paul was there, the churches were healthy and active. When John visited though, they were having problems. The Romans did not like John visiting the 7 churches to encourage them. They were trying to stop the spread of Christianity. They arrested John and then sent him to exile on a small barren island named Patmos. While he was on Patmos, John saw visions in which Jesus told him about the future of the world. Overview of the parts of the Revelation I. John tells about how he saw the vision and how Jesus looked when He talked to him. II. Letters to the 7 churches III. Things that will happen in the future.

Revelation 7 - 9 |
"The Seven Trumpets are
Given to the Angels" From the Woodcut series: The Revelation of St John (Apocalypse) (1497-98)Wood cut by Albrecht Dürer From Web Gallery of Art |
Another angel came and stood at the altar. He
had a golden censer (bowl that had fire in it). He was given a lot of incense so
he could offer it on the golden altar in front of the throne. He should offer it
with the prayers of all the saints.
[3] And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and
there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers
of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
Smoke came from the incense that was in the angel's
hand. It came with the saints' prayers and went up to God.
[4] And the smoke of the incense, which came with the prayers of the saints,
ascended up before God out of the angel's hand.
The angel took the censer. He filled it with fire from
the altar. Then he threw it on the earth. It made voices, thunder, lightning,
and an earthquake.
[5] And the angel took the censer, and filled it with fire of the altar, and
cast it into the earth: and there were voices, and thunderings, and lightnings,
and an earthquake.
The 7 angels with the 7 trumpets got ready to blow the
trumpets.
[6] And the seven angels which had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to
sound.
7 angels blow 7 trumpets
The 1st angel blows
his trumpet.
The 1st angel blew the trumpet. Then there was
hail and fire mixed with blood. The fire and the hail were thrown down on
the earth. A third of the trees were burned up. The green grass was all
burned.
[7] The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with
blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt
up, and all green grass was burnt up.
The 2nd angel blows
his trumpet.
The 2nd angel blew his trumpet. It was like a big
mountain was on fire and was thrown into the sea. One third of the sea became
blood. A third of the creatures in the sea died. A third of the ships were
destroyed.
[8] And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with
fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;
[9] And the third part of the creatures which were in the sea, and had life,
died; and the third part of the ships were destroyed.
The 3rd angel blows
his trumpet.
The 3rd angel blew his trumpet. A big star fell from heaven. It was
burning like a lamp. It fell on a third of the rivers and on the fountains of
water.
The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood.
Many men died because the water was bitter.
[10] And the third angel sounded, and there fell a great star from heaven,
burning as it were a lamp, and it fell upon the third part of the rivers, and
upon the fountains of waters;
[11] And the name of the star is called Wormwood: and the third part of the
waters became wormwood; and many men died of the waters, because they were made
bitter.
The 4th angel blows
his trumpet.
The 4th angel blew his trumpet. A third of the sun was
destroyed. Also, a third of the moon and the stars were dark. 1/3 of the day was
dark, and 1/3 of the night had no light.
[12] And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten,
and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third
part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the
night likewise.
I saw and heard an angel flying through heaven. He said
loudly, "Woe to the people who live on the earth because of the trumpets of the
3 angels that are left."
[13] And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying
with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of
the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!
During that time, men will want to die.
But they won't die.
[6] And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall
desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
The locusts were shaped like horses ready for battle.
Their heads had crowns like gold. Their faces looked like men. They had hair
like women and teeth like lions. They had breastplates like iron. Their
wings sounded like chariots with many horses running to battle. They had tails
like scorpions, and their tails stung. They had power to hurt men for 5 months.
[7] And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle;
and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the
faces of men.
[8] And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of
lions.
[9] And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of
their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
[10] And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their
tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
They had a king over them. He was the angel of the
bottomless pit. His Hebrew name is Abaddon. His Greek name is Apollyon. One bad
thing is past, but there will be 2 more bad things happen.
[11] And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit,
whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his
name Apollyon.
[12] One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.
The 6th angel blows his trumpet.
The 6th angel blew his trumpet. Earlier I had
seen 4 horns on the golden altar in front of God. Now I heard a voice from one
of the horns. The voice told the 6th angel to turn loose the 4 angels that are
tied up in the Euphrates River.
[13] And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the
golden altar which is before God,
[14] Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, Loose the four angels
which are bound in the great river Euphrates.
The 4 angels were turned loose. The 4 angels had been
getting ready for this day. They will kill a third of all men.
[15] And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a
day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.
I heard many horsemen in the army. There were
200,000 of them. The riders had breastplates of fire, jacinth, and brimstone.
The heads of the horses were like lions' heads. Fire, smoke, and brimstone came
out of their mouths.
[16] And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand
thousand: and I heard the number of them.
[17] And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having
breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses
were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and
brimstone.
The 3 parts -- fire, smoke, brimstone -- that came out of the horses' mouths
killed 1/3 of the men.
[18] By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the
smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.
The horses had power in their mouths and their tails.
Their tails were like snakes and had heads. The tails hurt people.
[19] For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were
like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.
The rest of the men who were not hurt did not repent of
their sins. They continued to worship devils and idols. The idols were made of
gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood. The idols cannot see, hear, or walk.
The men also did not repent of their sins of murder, sorcery (magic,
witchcraft), fornication, or stealing.
[20] And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented
not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols
of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see,
nor hear, nor walk:
[21] Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of
their fornication, nor of their thefts.
