The word "revelation" means something that was hidden is now visible or clear. This book makes Jesus Christ in glory visible. The revelation was from God who gave it to Jesus. Then Jesus gave it to an angel who gave it to John the Apostle.  John wrote the Revelation in about 94 to 96 A.D. At that time in history, the ruler of Rome was Emperor Domitian.

When he wrote the Revelation, John was an old man. He was the last of the 12 apostles who was still alive. John was visiting the churches in Asia Minor. That is in the area that is now called Turkey. Paul had also visited those churches about 30 years before. When Paul was there, the churches were healthy and active. When John visited though, they were having problems. The Romans did not like John visiting the 7 churches to encourage them. They were trying to stop the spread of Christianity. They arrested John and  then sent him to exile on a small barren island named Patmos. While he was on Patmos, John saw visions in which Jesus told him about the future of the world.

Overview of the parts of the Revelation

Revelation 13

The beast with 7 heads comes up out of the sea.

I stood on the beach. I saw a large beast rise up out of the sea. The beast had 7 heads and 10 horns.  On the 10 horns were 10 crowns. There were words of blasphemy saying bad things about God on each head.

[1] And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

The beast looked like a leopard.  His feet looked like bear's feet. His mouth looked like a lion's mouth. The dragon gave him his power, his seat, and his authority.
[2] And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.

One of  the heads looked like it had been injured badly enough to die. But the wound had healed.  The world was amazed at the beast.  They worshiped the dragon because he gave his power to the beast.  They worshiped the beast and asked who was as good as the beast and who could defeat him in a war.
[3] And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
[4] And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?

The beast had a mouth. He was saying bad things against God. He was allowed to have power for 42 months.  He talked bad against God and the tabernacle and the ones who live in heaven.
[5] And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.
[6] And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

The beast was to fight with the saints and defeat them. He was given power over all races and nations.
[7] And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

People will worship the beast -- these people are everyone whose names are not in the book of life of the Lamb that was killed.
[8] And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

Everyone should listen. The person who captures other people will also be captured.  The person who kills other people with a sword will also be killed with a sword.  God's saints must have patience and faith.
[9] If any man have an ear, let him hear.
[10] He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.

A beast with 2 horns comes up out of the earth.

I saw another beast coming up out of the earth.  This beast had 2 horns like a lamb. He talked like a dragon. He had the same power as the first beast. He caused the people in the earth to worship the first beast.  The wound on the first beast was healed.
[11] And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
[12] And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.

The beast did miracles. He made fire come down from heaven, and the people could see it. He tricked the people on earth by doing miracles that the beast could see. He told the people that they should make a statue of the beast that had been wounded with a sword and lived.
[13] And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
[14] And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.

He had the power to bring the statue of the beast to life. The statue could talk. The people who did not worship the statue were killed.
[15] And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.

He made everyone get a special mark on their right hands or on their foreheads. Everyone had to get the mark no matter if they were big or small, rich or poor, free or slave. If they didn't have the mark, they could not buy or sell anything.  The mark was the name or number of the beast. The number of the beast was 666.
[16] And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
[17] And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
[18] Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Revelation 14

The Lamb on Mt. Zion with 144,000 people.

Then I looked and saw a Lamb up on Mount Zion. With the Lamb were 144,000 people. They had God's name on their foreheads.
[1] And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads.

I head a voice from heaven. It sounded like many waters and great thunder.  I heard music made from playing harps. I heard voices singing a new song in front of the throne, the elders, and in front of the 4 beasts (the 4 beasts that were in front of the throne). The only people who could learn the song were the 144,00
0.  These people had been redeemed from the earth.
[2] And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps:
[3] And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.

There were virgins who had never been with women. They followed the Lamb wherever He went. They were redeemed from among other people. They were the firstfruits sacrifice to God and to the Lamb. They did not tell lies. They are perfect in front of God's throne.
[4] These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.
[5] And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.

Three angels

I saw another angel. The angel was flying in heaven. The angel had the everlasting gospel to preach to the people who live on the earth. They will preach to every nation, culture, language, and people.
[6] And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,

The angel said loudly, "Fear God and give glory to God. The hour of God's judgment has come.  Worship God, the one who made heaven, earth, the sea, and the fountains of water."
[7] Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.

There was another angel. This angel told that Babylon has fallen. Babylon has fallen because she caused other nations to sin.
[8] And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.

A third angel followed them.  He said that anyone who worships the beast, worships the beast's statue, or gets the mark of the beast on his forehead or hand will be punished by God.  They will drink the wine of God's wrath. The angels and the Lamb will watch them be tormented with fire and brimstone.  The smoke will go up forever and ever. They will not rest in the day or night.
[9] And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
[10] The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
[11] And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Saints are patient.  They have faith in Jesus and they obey God's laws.
[12] Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Jesus sitting on a cloud and holding a sharp sickle.

I heard a voice from heaven. The voice told me to write this. People who have faith in Jesus are blessed when they die. The Spirit says they will rest from their hard labor. They will be rewarded for the good things they do.

[13] And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.

I looked and I saw a white cloud.  Jesus was sitting on the cloud. He had a gold crown on his head. He was holding a sharp sickle.
[14] And I looked, and behold a white cloud, and upon the cloud one sat like unto the Son of man, having on his head a golden crown, and in his hand a sharp sickle.

Another angel came out of the temple. The angel cried to Jesus loudly. He told Him to use his sickle and harvest the earth. He said it is time to harvest.  Jesus put his sickle on the earth and reaped the harvest.
[15] And another angel came out of the temple, crying with a loud voice to him that sat on the cloud, Thrust in thy sickle, and reap: for the time is come for thee to reap; for the harvest of the earth is ripe.
[16] And he that sat on the cloud thrust in his sickle on the earth; and the earth was reaped.

Another angel came out of the temple in heaven. He also had a sharp sickle.  Another angel came out of the altar. This angel had power over fire.  He yelled to the angel that had the sharp sickle.  He told the angel to use his sickle to harvest the grapes that are ripe. The angel put the sickle on the earth and gathered grapes. He put the grapes in the winepress.  The winepress was the anger of God.  The grapes were crushed in the winepress. Blood came out of the winepress. It was so much blood that it reached as high as the horse bridles.  It was a measure of 1,600 furlongs.
[17] And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, he also having a sharp sickle.
[18] And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; for her grapes are fully ripe.
[19] And the angel thrust in his sickle into the earth, and gathered the vine of the earth, and cast it into the great winepress of the wrath of God.
[20] And the winepress was trodden without the city, and blood came out of the winepress, even unto the horse bridles, by the space of a thousand and six hundred furlongs.

Revelation 15\

Seven angels with 7 bowls of wrath.

Then I saw another vision in heaven.  It was great and marvelous.  I saw 7 angels with the last 7 plagues. After these 7 plagues, God will not be angry anymore.

[1] And I saw another sign in heaven, great and marvellous, seven angels having the seven last plagues; for in them is filled up the wrath of God.

I saw a sea of glass mixed with fire. I saw people standing on the sea of glass. These are the people who defeated the beast, the beast's image, and the beast's mark, and the beast's number.  These people were playing the harps of God.
[2] And I saw as it were a sea of glass mingled with fire: and them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God.

They were singing the song of Moses who was God's servant and the song of the Lamb.  They were saying that God's works are great and marvelous. He is the Lord God Almighty. His ways are fair and honest.  He is the King of the saints.
[3] And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.

Who is not afraid of you, O Lord?  Who does not glorify your name? You are the holy one.  All nations will come and worship you. Your judgments are fair.
[4] Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.

Then I looked and saw the temple of the tabernacle. The heaven was opened.  7 angels came out of the temple. They had 7 plagues. They were dressed in pure white linen.  They had on golden belts.
[5] And after that I looked, and, behold, the temple of the tabernacle of the testimony in heaven was opened:
[6] And the seven angels came out of the temple, having the seven plagues, clothed in pure and white linen, and having their breasts girded with golden girdles.

One of the four living creatures gave the 7 angels 7 vials (bowls). The bowls were full of the wrath (anger) of God who lives forever and ever.
[7] And one of the four beasts gave unto the seven angels seven golden vials full of the wrath of God, who liveth for ever and ever.

The temple was filled with smoke from the glory and power of God.  No man could enter into the temple until the 7 plagues of the 7 angels took place.
[8] And the temple was filled with smoke from the glory of God, and from his power; and no man was able to enter into the temple, till the seven plagues of the seven angels were fulfilled.
