The Book of Psalms
The word "psalm" is from the Greek word that means instrumental music and
the words that go with the music. There are 150 psalms. Most of them were
written by David, but some were written by David's son, Solomon, Asaph,
and the Sons of Korah. The psalms cover times in David's life when he was happy,
afraid, sad, and thankful.
People who are Bible scholars feel that Psalm 1 was written by Solomon. |
People who are Bible scholars feel that Psalm 2 was written by David. |
Why do people and nations make useless plans?
[1] Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
The leaders of the nations on earth plan together. They
plot against the Lord. They plot against the Lord's chosen, anointed people. The
leaders plot to break away from the Lord's anointed.
[2] The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together,
against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
[3] Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
This makes God laugh. He thinks they are not very
smart.
[4] He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in
derision.
Then God will speak to them angrily. He will cause them
to have trouble.
[5] Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore
displeasure.
God says that He has put His king on the holy hill of Zion.
[6] Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
This is what God said to me, "You are my son.
Today, I am your father. If you ask, I will give you the other nations
from all over the earth. You will break them with a rod of iron. You will
break them into little pieces like a piece of pottery.
[7] I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this
day have I begotten thee.
[8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the
uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
[9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces
like a potter's vessel.
I warn you other leaders to be wise. You should serve
God with fear and respect. You should rejoice with trembling. You should treat
God's son well or God will be angry and kill you. Everyone who puts their
trust in God will be blessed.
[10] Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
[11] Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
[12] Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath
is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
People who are Bible scholars feel that Psalm 3 was written by David. He wrote it during the time when he was running away from his son, Absalom and Absalom's followers (2 Samuel: 13-18). |
Psalm 3
David asks God to protect him.
Lord, the people who are troubling me are increasing. There are many that
are against me.
[1] LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up
against me.
There are many people who say you won't help me,
God. But you, O Lord, are a shield to protect me. You are my glory. You give me
honor.
[2] Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah.
[3] But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine
head.
I cried out loud to the Lord, and He heard me from His
holy mountain.
[4] I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill.
Selah.
I laid down and slept. Then I woke up because God took
care of me.
[5] I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.
There are 10,000 people attacking me from all around, but
I will not be afraid.
[6] I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves
against me round about.
Please save me, O Lord my God. You have hit my enemies
on their cheek bones. You have broken the ungodly people's teeth.
[7] Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies
upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly.
You save and bless your people, O Lord.
[8] Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

Psalm 6
Please save me, O Lord.
My soul is also very troubled. How long will
it be, O Lord? Please come back, O Lord, and save my soul. Save me because you
are merciful.
[3] My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long?
[4] Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies' sake.
After someone dies, he can't remember you. Who gives
you thanks when they are in the grave?
[5] For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give
thee thanks?
I am very tired from groaning. I cry a lot and
make my bed wet with tears.
[6] I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my
couch with my tears.
My eye is gone because of crying. It is old because of
my enemies.
[7] Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine
enemies.
Go away from me, all you people who do bad things. The Lord has heard me crying. He heard me pray, and He will answer
my prayer.
[8] Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the LORD hath heard the
voice of my weeping.
[9] The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.
Let all of my enemies be ashamed and have troubles.
Let them return to their homes and be suddenly embarrassed with disgrace.
[10] Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be
ashamed suddenly.

Psalms 7
God will judge the righteous and the wicked.
O Lord, my God, I trust you. Save me from the
people who are trying to hurt me. Save me or they will tear my soul into pieces,
like a lion tears things into pieces. There is no one else to save me.
[1] O Lord my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that
persecute me, and deliver me:
[2] Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none
to deliver.
O Lord my God, let my enemies take my soul if I have
sinned in these ways: if my hands have sinned or if I have treated someone badly
who was at peace with me or if I have fought and defeated someone who was not my
enemy. If I have done any of these things, let my enemies walk
on me on the ground.
[3] O LORD my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands;
[4] If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me; (yea, I have
delivered him that without cause is mine enemy:)
[5] Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread down my
life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. Selah.
Rise up, O Lord, with your anger because my enemies are
raging against me. You have commanded judgment for me.
[6] Arise, O LORD, in thine anger, lift up thyself because of the rage of mine
enemies: and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded.
The people will circle around you. For their sake,
return to your place in heaven.
[7] So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about: for their sakes
therefore return thou on high.
The Lord will judge the people. O Lord, judge me by my
righteousness and integrity.
[8] The LORD shall judge the people: judge me, O LORD, according to my
righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me.
Let the wicked people stop their wickedness. God
sees the hearts of righteous people and will be fair to them.
[9] Oh let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end; but establish the just:
for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins.
God will protect me. He saves the people who obey Him.
[10] My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.
God judges the righteous people, and He is angry
with the wicked people every day.
[11] God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
If the wicked man does not change, God will get His
sword ready. He also has his bow and arrow ready to kill the people who
persecute others
[12] If he turn not, he will whet his sword; he hath bent his bow, and made it
ready.
[13] He hath also prepared for him the instruments of death; he ordaineth his
arrows against the persecutors.
The wicked man works with evil and iniquity. He has
thought of bad things to do, and he tells lies. He dug a pit, and he fell
into a ditch that he made himself. He has trouble as a result of the
trouble he made himself. He deals with violence, so violence will happen
to him.
[14] Behold, he travaileth with iniquity, and hath conceived mischief, and
brought forth falsehood.
[15] He made a pit, and digged it, and is fallen into the ditch which he made.
[16] His mischief shall return upon his own head, and his violent dealing shall
come down upon his own pate.
I will praise God because He is righteous. I will
sing praises to the name of the Lord most high.
[17] I will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing praise
to the name of the LORD most high.

Psalms 8
God's name is excellent and powerful.
O Lord, you are our Lord. Your name is excellent all
over the earth. Your glory is higher than the heavens.
[1] O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set
thy glory above the heavens.
Children and babies sing praises for you. That shows
your strength, and you defeat your enemies.
[2] Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because
of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
I think about the stars, moon, and planets that you
made with Your hands. That makes me wonder why you care about men and help them.
[3] When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the
stars, which thou hast ordained;
[4] What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou
visitest him?
You have made man a little lower than the
angels. You have crowned man with glory and honor.
[5] For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him
with glory and honour.
You made man to be in control over your creation. Man
is in control of everything that is under his feet.
[6] Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put
all things under his feet:
Man is in charge of the sheep, oxen, and all the
animals of the field. He is in control of the birds and the fish, and
anything that swims in the sea O, Lord, our Lord, your name is excellent
over all the earth.
[7] All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
[8] The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through
the paths of the seas.
[9] O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!

Psalm 9
God's people trust Him.
I will praise you with my whole heart, O Lord. I will
tell other people about your great works.
Make them afraid, O Lord, so the nations see
they are not powerful like You.
[20] Put them in fear, O LORD: that the nations may know themselves to be but
men. Selah.
Psalm 10
Bible scholars feel that David wrote Psalm 10. |
The bad things that wicked people do.
Why do you stand far away, O Lord? Why can't I see You
when there is trouble?
Wicked people are always
doing bad things. They don't worry about God's judgment. They do not worry about
their enemies.
[5] His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight:
as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them.
The wicked man says that no one can hurt him. He says
nothing will cause him any trouble.
[6] He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in
adversity.
The wicked man says bad things. He curses, lies, and
cheats. Everything he says causes problems.
[7] His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is
mischief and vanity.
The wicked man hides in dark places in his town. He
murders innocent people. He takes advantage of poor people. He waits for his
victim like a lion waits in his den. He waits to catch the poor people, then
pulls them into his net of trouble. He overpowers poor people.
[8] He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth
he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor.
[9] He lieth in wait secretly as a lion in his den: he lieth in wait to catch
the poor: he doth catch the poor, when he draweth him into his net.
[10] He croucheth, and humbleth himself, that the poor may fall by his strong
ones.
The wicked man thinks that God doesn't see the bad
things he does.
[11] He hath said in his heart, God hath forgotten: he hideth his face; he will
never see it.
O Lord, please arise and do not forget the humble
people.
[12] Arise, O LORD; O God, lift up thine hand: forget not the humble.
Why do the wicked people talk bad about God? They say
that God won't punish them.
[13] Wherefore doth the wicked contemn God? he hath said in his heart, Thou wilt
not require it.
But You, God, have seen this. You have seen the bad
things they do. You will punish them. The poor people believe in You. You will
help the orphans who have no fathers.
[14] Thou hast seen it; for thou beholdest mischief and spite, to requite it
with thy hand: the poor committeth himself unto thee; thou art the helper of the
fatherless.
Please, God, break the arm of the wicked and evil men
until they don't do bad things anymore.
[15] Break thou the arm of the wicked and the evil man: seek out his wickedness
till thou find none.
The Lord is King forever and ever. The people who don't believe in Him will die
out of His land.
[16] The LORD is King for ever and ever: the heathen are perished out of his
land.
Lord, You have heard the prayers of the humble people.
You will prepare their hearts. You will hear them. You will help the orphans and
people who have a hard time so that no one on earth can oppress them again.
[17] LORD, thou hast heard the desire of the humble: thou wilt prepare their
heart, thou wilt cause thine ear to hear:
[18] To judge the fatherless and the oppressed, that the man of the earth may no
more oppress.
