Obadiah was one of the minor prophets. He was an Edomite -- a person who lived in the area of Edom. Edom was southeast of Israel. The person who founded (started) Edom was Esau. Back in the book of Genesis, Esau was Jacob's twin brother.  Jacob tricked Esau and got his birthright. Esau left and went to the land that was named Edom. The people in Edom did not like the Israelites and did not get along with them.

The Book of  Obadiah

Obadiah 1

Edom did not help Israel.
Edom did not treat Israel well.
Obadiah tells that God will destroy Edom.

Obadiah 1

God will punish Edom because they were against Israel.

This was Obadiah's vision. He told what God said about Edom.  He said there was a message from God. God sent someone to the other countries. These were the countries that did not worship Him.  He caused these countries to go against Edom.
[1] The vision of Obadiah. Thus saith the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumour from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise ye, and let us rise up against her in battle.

God said that He has made Edom small. They are smaller than the other countries who don't believe in Him. Many countries hate them.
[2] Behold, I have made thee small among the heathen: thou art greatly despised.

The people in Edom are too proud and conceited. They live up high in the cracks of rocks. They think that no one can take them down.
[3] The pride of thine heart hath deceived thee, thou that dwellest in the clefts of the rock, whose habitation is high; that saith in his heart, Who shall bring me down to the ground?

Edom was south of Israel.

They think they are good like eagles. They live high like a nest in the stars. But God said He will bring them down.
[4] Though thou exalt thyself as the eagle, and though thou set thy nest among the stars, thence will I bring thee down, saith the LORD.

When thieves break in at night, they steal only what they want and leave the rest. If people came to pick grapes, they would leave some grapes on the vine. Edom will be cut off.
[5] If thieves came to thee, if robbers by night, (how art thou cut off!) would they not have stolen till they had enough? if the grapegatherers came to thee, would they not leave some grapes?

God sees Edom's hidden sins.

[6] How are the things of Esau searched out! how are his hidden things sought up!

Edom's allies have betrayed them. The countries at peace with Edom have tricked them, then defeated them. The people who eat Edom's food have wounded them. No one is supporting them.
[7] All the men of thy confederacy have brought thee even to the border: the men that were at peace with thee have deceived thee, and prevailed against thee; they that eat thy bread have laid a wound under thee: there is none understanding in him.

On that day, God will destroy the wise men in Edom and on the mountain of Esau. The soldiers in Edom's area named Teman will be sad because everyone will be destroyed.
[8] Shall I not in that day, saith the LORD, even destroy the wise men out of Edom, and understanding out of the mount of Esau?
[9] And thy mighty men, O Teman, shall be dismayed, to the end that every one of the mount of Esau may be cut off by slaughter.

Edom will be destroyed because they were violent against the Israelites.
[10] For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.

The people in Edom stood and watched while other countries attacked Israel. The other people had a lottery to see who would get Jerusalem.  Edom was like one of them.
[11] In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.

Edom should not have watched when Israel was attacked. They should not have been happy about that. They should not have bragged that Israel was having trouble.
[12] But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.

Edom shouldn't have come to Israel when they were having trouble. They should not have watched while they were being attacked. They should not have stolen Israel's things on that day.
[13] Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;

Edom should not have blocked Israelites who were trying to escape.  Edom caught some of the Israelites who did not leave.  They should not have done that.
[14] Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.

God will destroy Edom soon. They will be treated the way that they treated Israel.
[15] For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.

The people of Edom drank on God's holy mountain. The heathen people will also drink. They will drink and swallow. It will seem like they never existed.
[16] For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.

The people who go to Mount Zion will be saved. It will be holy. The Israelites will have the things they own again.
[17] But upon mount Zion shall be deliverance, and there shall be holiness; and the house of Jacob shall possess their possessions.

The Israelite tribes of Jacob and Joseph will be like fire. The descendants of Esau in Edom will be destroyed.  The fire will burn them. There will not be anyone left. That is God's command.
[18] And the house of Jacob shall be a fire, and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau for stubble, and they shall kindle in them, and devour them; and there shall not be any remaining of the house of Esau; for the LORD hath spoken it.

The Israelites in the south will take part of Edom's land. They will take the mountain of Esau. The Israelites in the hills will take over the land of the Philistines, the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria.  The Israelites from the tribe of Benjamin will take over the area of Gilead.
[19] And they of the south shall possess the mount of Esau; and they of the plain the Philistines: and they shall possess the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria: and Benjamin shall possess Gilead.

Some of the Israelites will be taken away by other people. Later, they will come back. When they come back, they will take the Canaanites' land to the area of Zarephath.  Some of the Israelites from Jerusalem will be taken to the place named Sepharad. When they come back, they will take the area of the cities in the south.
[20] And the captivity of this host of the children of Israel shall possess that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerusalem, which is in Sepharad, shall possess the cities of the south.

The people who save will go up on Mount Zion. They will judge the mountain of Esau. It will be the Lord's kingdom.
[21] And saviours shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD's.
