John 7
Jesus travels to Jerusalem for a feast and teaches in the temple
Jesus then traveled in the area of Galilee (His
home). He
did not want to stay in the area of Judaea. The Jews in Judea wanted to kill
Him.
[1] After these things Jesus walked in Galilee: for he would not walk
in Jewry, because the Jews sought to kill him.
It was time for the Jewish celebration
called the Feast of Tabernacles. His brothers told Him to leave Galilee and
go back to Judaea. They said that in Judaea, His followers would see the
miracles He did. They said that anyone who did miracles wanted a lot of
people to see them. They said that Jesus should let the world see His
miracles.
[2] Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.
[3] His brethren therefore said unto him, Depart hence, and go into
Judaea, that thy disciples also may see the works that thou doest.
[4] For there is no man that doeth any thing in secret, and he
himself seeketh to be known openly. If thou do these things, shew thyself to
the world.
But His brothers did not really believe in Him.
[5] For neither did his brethren believe in him.
Jesus said to them, "It is not My time yet.
But it's always your time. The world doesn't hate you. But the world hates
Me because I tell them that they are sinning. You should go to the Feast
celebration. I am not going to it yet. It is not My time yet."
[6] Then Jesus said unto them, My time is not yet come: but your time
is alway ready.
[7] The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of
it, that the works thereof are evil.
[8] Go ye up unto this feast: I go not up yet unto this feast; for my
time is not yet full come.
After He said those things, He stayed in
Galilee. But, after His brothers left and went to the Feast, He went, too.
He went quietly, in secret.
[9] When he had said these words unto them, he abode still in
Galilee.
[10] But when his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto
the feast, not openly, but as it were in secret.
The Jews were looking for Him at the Feast. They
said, "Where is He?"
[11] Then the Jews sought him at the feast, and said, Where is he?
A lot of people were talking about Him. Some
people said He was a good man. Other people said He was lying and a fake.
[12] And there was much murmuring among the people concerning him:
for some said, He is a good man: others said, Nay; but he deceiveth the
people.
But no one spoke openly about Him because they
were afraid of the Jews.
[13] Howbeit no man spake openly of him for fear of the Jews.
During the Feast, Jesus went up to the temple
and taught.
[14] Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple,
and taught.
The Jews were amazed. They said, "How does this
man know things He has never been taught?
[15] And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters,
having never learned?
Jesus answered them. He said, "The things I
teach are not mine. They come from Him who sent Me. Anyone who does God's
will knows what I am saying. They will know if it comes from God or if I'm
making it up Myself.
[16] Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his
that sent me.
[17] If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine,
whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
The man who talks about himself is just looking
for his own glory. But, the man who wants to see God's glory is honest. He
does not sin and behave badly. Didn't Moses give you the law? But none of
you obey the law. Why are you trying to kill Me?
[18] He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that
seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is
in him.
[19] Did not Moses give you the law, and yet none of you keepeth the
law? Why go ye about to kill me?
The people answered. They said, "You have a
devil. Who is trying to kill You?"
[20] The people answered and said, Thou hast a devil: who goeth about
to kill thee?
Jesus answered and said, "I have done one
miracle, and you were amazed. Moses' law told you about circumcision.
Circumcision was started earlier by Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph. It is
okay to circumcise a man on the sabbath. So, if that is okay, why are you
angry with Me because I healed a man on the sabbath? Don't judge just on how
things look. Judge things fairly."
[21] Jesus answered and said unto them, I have done one work, and ye
all marvel.
[22] Moses therefore gave unto you circumcision; (not because it is
of Moses, but of the fathers;) and ye on the sabbath day circumcise a man.
[23] If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law
of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man
every whit whole on the sabbath day?
[24] Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous
judgment.
Some of the people from Jerusalem asked, "Isn't
this the One they want to kill? He speaks openly, and they don't say
anything to Him. Do the leaders know that this is truly the Christ? We know
where this man is from. But when Christ comes, no one will know where he
comes from."
[25] Then said some of them of Jerusalem, Is not this he, whom they
seek to kill?
[26] But, lo, he speaketh boldly, and they say nothing unto him. Do
the rulers know indeed that this is the very Christ?
[27] Howbeit we know this man whence he is: but when Christ cometh,
no man knoweth whence he is.
Jesus was still teaching in the temple. He cried
out, "You know Me, and you know where I came from. I did not come from
Myself, but I came from God who sent Me. God is true. You don't know Him.
But I know Him because I came from Him. He has sent Me."
[28] Then cried Jesus in the temple as he taught, saying, Ye both
know me, and ye know whence I am: and I am not come of myself, but he that
sent me is true, whom ye know not.
[29] But I know him: for I am from him, and he hath sent me.
Then, the people tried to grab Jesus. But no one touched Him because it was
not His time.
[30] Then they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him,
because his hour was not yet come.
Many of the people believed in Jesus. They said, "When Christ comes, will He
do anything greater than this man has done?"
[31] And many of the people believed on him, and said, When Christ
cometh, will he do more miracles than these which this man hath done?
The Pharisees heard that people were saying things like this about Jesus.
The Jewish leaders and the chief priests sent guards to arrest Him.
[32] The Pharisees heard that the people murmured such things
concerning him; and the Pharisees and the chief priests sent officers to
take him.
Jesus told them that He would be with them a little while. Then, He would go
to the One who sent Him. He said, "You will look for Me, but you will not
find Me. I am going someplace that you cannot go."
[33] Then said Jesus unto them, Yet a little while am I with you, and
then I go unto him that sent me.
[34] Ye shall seek me, and shall not find me: and where I am, thither
ye cannot come.
The Jews said to each other, "Where will He go
that we can't find Him? Will He go into other areas and teach the Gentiles?
What is He talking about when He says 'you will look for Me, but you won't
find Me' and 'where I am going, you can't come?'"
[35] Then said the Jews among themselves, Whither will he go, that we
shall not find him? will he go unto the dispersed among the Gentiles, and
teach the Gentiles?
[36] What manner of saying is this that he said, Ye shall seek me,
and shall not find me: and where I am, thither ye cannot come?
The Jews argue because they said the Messiah will
come from Bethlehem, and Jesus grew up in Galilee.
On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus
stood and cried, "If any man is thirsty, come to Me and drink. Anyone who
believes in Me will have rivers of living water flow out of His belly. That
is what the scripture said. (He meant that the believers would receive the
Holy Spirit. This would happen later. But right now, Jesus had not yet been
glorified.)
[37] In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and
cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
[38] He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his
belly shall flow rivers of living water.
[39] (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him
should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was
not yet glorified.)
After they heard this, many people said, "Truly,
this is the Prophet."
[40] Many of the people therefore, when they heard this saying, said,
Of a truth this is the Prophet.
Other people said, "This is the Christ." But
then other people said, "Will Christ come out of Galilee? Didn't the
scripture say that Christ would come from the family of David? He will come
from David's family's area in Bethlehem ." (Note: Bethlehem is about
100 miles from Galilee)
[41] Others said, This is the Christ. But some said, Shall Christ
come out of Galilee?"
[42] Hath not the scripture said, That Christ cometh of the seed of
David, and out of the town of Bethlehem, where David was?
So, people did not agree about Jesus, and they
argued. Some people wanted to capture Him. But no one captured Him.
[43] So there was a division among the people because of him.
[44] And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on
him.
Then, they leaders went to the chief priests and
the highest Jewish leaders. They said, "Why haven't you brought Him down? No
one ever talked like this man."
[45] Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and
they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him?
[46] The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
The Pharisees answered, "Are you also fooled?
Have any of the Pharisees believed what He says? But the people who don't
know the laws are cursed."
[47] Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived?
[48] Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?
[49] But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed.
Nicodemus had talked to Jesus one night. He said
to the others, "Does our law judge someone before they have been heard? Do
we judge someone before we know what he's doing?"
[50] Nicodemus saith unto them, (he that came to Jesus by night,
being one of them,)
[51] Doth our law judge any man, before it hear him, and know what he
doeth?
They answered, "Aren't you also from Galilee? Look around and see that no
prophet has come out of Galilee."
[52] They answered and said unto him, Art thou also of Galilee?
Search, and look: for out of Galilee ariseth no prophet.
Then everyone went back to his own home.
[53] And every man went unto his own house.
John 8
Jesus saves a woman who is going to be stoned for
committing adultery.
Jesus went to the mount of Olives. Then, in the morning, He went to the
temple. A crowd went with Him. He sat down and taught them.
[1] Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.
[2] And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all
the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.
There was a woman in the area who was having an
affair with a married man. She had been arrested. The Jewish leaders brought
her to Jesus. They told Him she was committing adultery. The law of Moses
said she must be killed by people throwing rocks at her. They wanted to know
what Jesus' opinion was.
[3] And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in
adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,
[4] They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in
the very act.
[5] Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned:
but what sayest thou?
The Jewish leaders were trying to trick Jesus so
that they could arrest Him, too. But Jesus stooped down and started
writing in the dirt. He acted like He didn't hear them.
[6] This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him.
But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though
he heard them not.
They kept asking Him what He thought. Finally, He
stood up and said, "Any of you who have never sinned can throw the first
rock at her." Then, He stooped down again and started writing in the dirt.
[7] So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said
unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at
her.
[8] And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.
The Jewish leaders heard Jesus. They felt guilty.
They left one by one. The oldest one left first, and they youngest one left
last. Jesus and the woman were left alone in the middle.
[9] And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience,
went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus
was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
When Jesus stood up, He saw only the woman. He said
to her, "Woman, where are the people who accused you? Has anyone thrown
rocks at you?"
[10] When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he
said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned
thee?
The woman said, "No one, Lord." Jesus said to her, "I don't condemn
you either. Go now and don't sin anymore."
[11] She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I
condemn thee: go, and sin no more.
Jesus speaks at the temple in Jerusalem.
Then Jesus spoke to the people. He said, "I am the
light of the world. People who follow Me will not walk in darkness. They
will have the light of life."
[12] Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the
world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the
light of life.
The Pharisees said to Jesus, "You are saying things
about yourself that are not true."
[13] The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of
thyself; thy record is not true.
Jesus said, "Even though I am telling about Myself,
I am telling the truth. I know where I came from and where I am going. But,
you don't know where I came from and where I am going. You judge from human
laws. I do not judge anyone. But if I judge anyone, it is true. I am not
alone. I judge with the Father who sent Me."
[14] Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of
myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go;
but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.
[15] Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.
[16] And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but
I and the Father that sent me.
Jesus continued, "In your law, it says that if two
men say the same thing, it is true. I am telling you about Myself, and
My Father who sent Me is telling you about Me."
[17] It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is
true.
[18] I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent
me beareth witness of me.
The people asked Him, "Where is Your Father?"
Jesus answered, "You don't know Me or my Father. If you had known Me, you
would have known my Father."
[19] Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye
neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my
Father also.
Jesus said these things in the part of the Temple
where people took their offerings. No one arrested Him, because it was not
His time yet.
[20] These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the
temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.
Jesus tells the
Jews that He is from God.
Then, Jesus said to them again, "I will go
away. You will look for Me. You will die in your sins. I am going someplace
that you cannot go."
[21] Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek
me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.
The Jews said, "Will He kill Himself?" They said that because Jesus said, "I
am going someplace that you cannot go."
[22] Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith,
Whither I go, ye cannot come.
Jesus said to them, "You are from below. I am from
above. You are part of this world. I am not part of this world. That is why
I told you that you will die in your sins if you don't believe that I am
He."
[23] And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye
are of this world; I am not of this world.
[24] I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for
if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
They said to Jesus, "Who are You?" Jesus said to
them, "I have been telling you from the beginning. I have many things to say
to you and to judge of you. The One who sent Me is true. I tell the world
the things I have heard of Him."
[25] Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto
them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.
[26] I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent
me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.
They didn't understand that Jesus was talking to
them about God the Father.
[27] They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.
Jesus said to them, "When you praise the Son of man, then you will know that I am He. I
don't do anything Myself. I say what My Father taught Me. He who sent
Me is with Me. The Father has not left Me alone. I always do what makes Him
happy."
[28] Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of
man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but
as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.
[29] And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me
alone; for I do always those things that please him.
As Jesus said these things, many people believed in
Him.
[30] As he spake these words, many believed on him.
Jesus talked to the Jews who believed in Him. He
said, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly My followers. You will
know the truth. The truth will make you free."
[31] Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye
continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
[32] And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
They answered, "We are descendants of Abraham.
We have never been slaves of any man. What do you mean that we will be made
free?"
[33] They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in
bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
Jesus answered them. He said, "Truly I say to
you that anyone who sins is a slave to sin. The servant does not live in the
house forever. But the Son lives forever. If the Son makes you free, you
will truly be free. I know you are descendants of Abraham. But you are
trying to kill me because my word has no place in you. I say what I have
seen with My Father. You say what you have seen with your father."
[34] Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever
committeth sin is the servant of sin.
[35] And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son
abideth ever.
[36] If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free
indeed.
[37] I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me,
because my word hath no place in you.
[38] I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that
which ye have seen with your father.
They answered and said, "Abraham is our father."
Jesus said, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of
Abraham. But now you want to kill Me. I am a man who has told you the truth.
I have heard the truth from God. Abraham didn't do this."
[39] They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus
saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of
Abraham.
[40] But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth,
which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.
[41] Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not
born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.
Jesus said to them, "If God was your Father, you
would love Me. You would love me because I came from God. I did not come by
Myself, but God sent Me.
[42] Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me:
for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he
sent me.
Why don't you understand Me? You cannot hear My word. It is because your
father is the devil. You will do the evil things the devil wants you to do.
He has always been a murderer since the beginning. He does not tell the
truth at all. When he tells a lie, he is the one who made up the lie.
[43] Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear
my word.
[44] Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye
will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth,
because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his
own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
I am telling you the truth, but you do not believe
Me.
[45] And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
Can any of you prove that I am guilty of sin? If I say the truth, why don't
you believe Me?
[46] Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why
do ye not believe me?
The one who belongs to God hears what God says. So, if you don't belong to
God, you don't hear what He says."
[47] He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them
not, because ye are not of God.
The Jews answered. They said to Jesus, "Are we right when we say You are a
Samaritan, and You have a devil evil spirit?
[48] Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that
thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?
Jesus answered, "I do not have a devil. I honor My
Father. You insult Me. I don't look for My own glory. There is someone who
looks for glory, and He will judge. Truly I say to you, if a man obeys
what I say, he will never die."
[49] Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and
ye do dishonour me.
[50] And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and
judgeth.
[51] Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he
shall never see death.
Then the Jews said to Jesus, "Now we know you have
a devil. Abraham and the prophets are dead. But You said people who obey
will not die. Are you better than our father Abraham and the prophets who
are dead? Are you making Yourself better than them?"
[52] Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil.
Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying,
he shall never taste of death.
[53] Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the
prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?
Jesus answered, "If I honor Myself, My honor
doesn't mean anything. My Father honors Me. You say My Father is your God.
But you have not known Him. I have known Him. If I say that I don't
know Him, then I am a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I obey Him.
[54] Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is
my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:
[55] Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say,
I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep
his saying.
Your father, Abraham, saw My day. He was very
happy."
[56] Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and
was glad.
The Jews said to Jesus, "You are not even 50 years old. Have you seen
Abraham?"
[57] Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old,
and hast thou seen Abraham?
Jesus said to them, "I say to you truly, that
before Abraham lived, I am."
[58] Jesus said unto them, Verily,verily, I say unto you, Before
Abraham was, I am.
Then the crowd picked up rocks to throw at Jesus. But Jesus hid and then He
escaped the temple. They didn't see Him escape.
[59] Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself,
and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed
by.
John 9
Jesus heals a man who was born blind.
Jesus was walking, and He saw a blind man. The man
was born blind. The disciples asked Jesus, "Master, this man is blind. Is he
blind because he sinned or did his parents sin?"
[1] And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his
birth.
[2] And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this
man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered, "Neither. He is not blind because
anyone sinned. He is blind so that other people can see God work. I must do
God's work. God sent Me. I must do God's work while it is day. After it is
night, no one can work. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the
world."
[3] Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents:
but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
[4] I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the
night cometh, when no man can work.
[5] As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.
After Jesus said this, He spit on the ground. He
made clay by mixing His saliva and the dirt. He put the clay on the blind
man's eyes. Jesus said to the man, "Go wash in the pool named Siloam." (The
word "Siloam" means "sent.") The man went and washed. When he came
back, he could see.
[6] When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of
the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,
[7] And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by
interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came
seeing.
The neighbors and other people saw the man. They asked, "Isn't this the man
who used to sit and beg?"
[8] The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that
he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?
Some people said, "Yes, it's him." Other people
said it wasn't that man but he just looked like him. But the man said, "I am that man."
[9] Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said,
I am he.
The people asked the man, "How can you see now?"
[10] Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?
The man answered, "A man named Jesus made some
clay. He put the clay on my eyes. Then he told me to go wash in the Siloam
pool. I went to the pool and washed. Then, I started to see."
[11] He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and
anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash:
and I went and washed, and I received sight.
The people said, "Where is Jesus?" The man said, "I
don't know."
[12] Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.
The people took the man to the Pharisees. Jesus had
healed the man on the sabbath. The Pharisees asked the man how he
started to see again. He said, "Jesus put clay on my eyes. After I
washed it off, I could see."
[13] They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.
[14] And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened
his eyes.
[15] Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his
sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do
see.
Some of the Pharisees said, "The man is not of God
because He breaks the law about the sabbath day." Other people said,
"How can a man do great miracles if He is a sinner?" There was a lot of
arguing between them.
[16] Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God,
because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a
sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.
They asked the man who had been blind, "What do you
say about Jesus?" The man said, "He is a prophet."
[17] They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that
he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.
The Jews did not believe that the man had truly
been healed. They asked his parents, "Is this your son who says he was born
blind? How can he now see?"
[18] But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been
blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had
received his sight.
[19] And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was
born blind? how then doth he now see?
The parents answered, "We know this is our son. He
was born blind. We don't know how he can see now. We don't know who opened
his eyes. He is old enough to tell you himself."
[20] His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our
son, and that he was born blind:
[21] But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened
his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.
His parents were afraid to tell the truth
because they were afraid of the Jews. The Jews had already agreed that
anyone who said Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.
That's why the parents said, "He is old enough to tell you himself."
[22] These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for
the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ,
he should be put out of the synagogue.
[23] Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.
Then the Jews again called the man who was healed.
They said, "Swear to God. We know that Jesus is a sinner."
[24] Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto
him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.
The man said, "I don't know if He is a sinner or
not. The only thing I know is that I was blind, but now I can see."
[25] He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not:
one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.
The Jews said to the man again, "How did He open
your eyes? What did He do?"
[26] Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he
thine eyes?
The man said, "I already told you, but you didn't
listen to me. Why should I tell you again? Will it make you follow Him
and be His disciples?"
[27] He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear:
wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?
The Jews were mad at him. They said, "You are His
disciple, but we are Moses' disciples. We know that God talked to Moses. But
we don't know where this man came from."
[28] Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we
are Moses' disciples.
[29] We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know
not from whence he is.
The man answered and said, "It's strange that you
don't know where He came from, but He healed my eyes. We know that God won't
listen to sinners. But God will hear people who worship Him and do His will.
Since the beginning of the world, no one has ever heard of a person who
heals blind people. If this man wasn't from God, He couldn't do anything."
[30] The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous
thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.
[31] Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a
worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.
[32] Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the
eyes of one that was born blind.
[33] If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.
The Jews answered, "You were born in sin. And
you're trying to teach us?" They sent the man away.
[34] They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in
sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
Jesus heard that they sent him away. When Jesus
found the man, He said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of God?"
[35] Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found
him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?
The man answered, "Lord, who is He so that I can
believe in Him?"
[36] He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on
him?
Jesus said, "You have seen Him, and He has talked to
you."
[37] And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he
that talketh with thee.
The man said, "Lord, I believe." And the man worshiped Him.
[38] And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.
Jesus said, "I have come into this world to
judge. I will make the blind people see, and the people who see will become
blind."
[39] And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that
they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.
Some of the Pharisees that were there heard
Him. They said, "Are we also blind?"
[40] And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words,
and said unto him, Are we blind also?
Jesus said to them, "If you were blind, you would
not have any sin. Now that you say you can see, that means your sin is still
there."
[41] Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin:
but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
