The Book of John
John was one of Jesus' 12 apostles. His father's name was Zebedee. In this book,
he never calls himself by his name. He calls himself "the disciple whom Jesus
loved". John wrote this book between the years AD 85 and AD 95. During
this time, he was serving in the church in the city of Ephesus (in the country
now called Turkey).
John's book is different than the books of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Those books
show Jesus as king, but John's book shows Jesus as the Son of God.

I have glorified You on earth. I finished the
work that You gave Me to do.
[4] I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work
which thou gavest me to do.
Now, O Father, glorify Me. I had glory with You
before the world was created. Glorify Me with the same glory now.
[5] And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the
glory which I had with thee before the world was.
I have been Your name to the men that you gave
Me out of the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to Me. You have kept
Your promise.
[6] I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out
of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept
thy word.
Now, they know that all things You have given Me are from You.
[7] Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me
are of thee.
I have told them what You told Me. They have
listened and surely know that I came out from You. They have believed that
You did send Me.
[8] For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and
they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee,
and they have believed that thou didst send me.
I pray for them. I don't pray for the world, but
I pray for the people You have given Me. They are Yours.
[9] I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which
thou hast given me; for they are thine.
All of Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine. I am glorified in them.
[10] And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified
in them.
Now, I am not in the world anymore. But these people are in the world. I am
coming to You. Holy Father, in Your name, keep the people You have
given Me safe. Keep them safe so they might be like one person,
like We are One.
[11] And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world,
and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou
hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
While I was with them in the world, I kept them
in Your name. I kept the Ones you gave Me safe. None of them was lost
except for the bad one. This fulfills the scripture.
[12] While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name:
those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son
of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
Now I come to You. I speak these things in the
world so they will have My joy inside them.
[13] And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world,
that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
I have given them Your word, and the world hated them. The world hated them
because they are not part of the world just like I am not part of the world.
[14] I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them,
because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
I don't pray for You to take them out of the
world. But, I pray that you keep them safe from evil.
[15] I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but
that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
They are not part of the world, like I am not part of the world.
[16] They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Make them clean with Your truth. Your word is
truth.
[17] Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
You have sent me into the world. Now I am
sending them to the world.
[18] As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent
them into the world.
I make Myself special to You for them so they
can be special to You, too. They become special to You through the truth.
[19] And for their sakes I sanctify yself, that they also might be
sanctified through the truth.
I don't just pray for these by themselves. I also pray for the people who
will believe in Me because they hear them.
[20] Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall
believe on me through their word;
They pray so that everyone might be like one. So that they
will be in You, Father, like You are in Me and I am in You.
[21] That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in
thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou
hast sent me.
You gave Me glory, and I give it to them. I
give them Your glory so they will be one like We are one.
[22] And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they
may be one, even as we are one:
I am in them, and You are in Me. They will be
perfect in one. The world will know that You have sent Me. The world
will know that You have loved them the way You have loved Me.
[23] I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one;
and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as
thou hast loved me.
Father, I pray that the people You have given Me
will be with Me now. I pray they will stay with Me so they can see My glory. You
have given me My glory because you have loved me before You started to make
the world.
[24] Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with
me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for
thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
O good Father, the world hasn't known You, but I
have known You. These people have known that You sent Me.
[25] O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have
known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
I have strongly told them Your name. I will strongly tell them that the
strong love You have for Me can also be in them.
[26] And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it:
that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
When Jesus said these things, He went on with
His disciples. They crossed over the creek named Cedron. There was a
garden there. Jesus and His disciples went in. Judas was the man who
betrayed Jesus. He knew about this place because Jesus and His disciples
went there often.
[1] When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his
disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into the which he
entered, and his disciples.
[2] And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus
ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples.
Judas and a group of men from the Jewish leaders
came to the place. They were carrying lanterns, torches, and weapons.
[3] Judas then, having received a band of men and officers from the
chief priests and Pharisees, cometh thither with lanterns and torches and
weapons.
Jesus knew this was going to happen. He
stepped forward and said, "Who are you looking for?"
[4] Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him,
went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?
They answered, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said
to them, "I am He." Judas was there with them.
[5] They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am
he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them.
As soon as Jesus said this, they backed up and fell down on the ground.
[6] As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went
backward, and fell to the ground.
Jesus asked them again, "Who are you looking
for?" They answered, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said, "I told you that
I am He. If you're looking for Me, let the others leave. Let them
leave like the scripture said, 'I have lost none of the people that You gave
to Me.' "
[7] Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of
Nazareth.
[8] Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye
seek me, let these go their way:
[9] That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which
thou gavest me have I lost none.
Then Simon Peter pulled out a sword. He cut off
the ear of the high priest's servant. The servant's name was Malchus.
[10] Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high
priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.
Then Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword away.
My Father gave Me a cup to drink out of. Shouldn't I drink it?"
[11] Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath:
the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
Then the group (the leaders and soldiers of the Jews) took Jesus and tied up
His hands. They led Him away. First, they took Him to Annas. Annas was
the father-in-law of Caiaphas. Caiaphas was the high priest that year.
[12] Then the band and the captain and officers of the Jews took
Jesus, and bound him,
[13] And led him away to Annas first; for he was father in law to
Caiaphas, which was the high priest that same year.
Caiaphas was the man telling the Jews what to
do. He said it was best for one man to die for everyone.
[14] Now Caiaphas was he, which gave counsel to the Jews, that it was
expedient that one man should die for the people.
Simon Peter followed Jesus. Another disciple who
knew the high priest went, too. The other disciple went into the high
priest's palace. But Peter stood outside by the door. The other
disciple went out and asked the woman by the gate to let Peter in.
[15] And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple:
that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into
the palace of the high priest.
[16] But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other
disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept
the door, and brought in Peter.
The woman by the door said to Peter, "Aren't you also one of this man's
disciples?" Peter said, "I am not."
[17] Then saith the damsel that kept the door unto Peter, Art not
thou also one of this man's disciples? He saith, I am not.
Some of the officers and servants were standing
there. They made a fire because it was cold outside. They were getting warm.
Peter was standing with them. He was trying to get warm, too.
[18] And the servants and officers stood there, who had made a fire
of coals; for it was cold: and they warmed themselves: and Peter stood with
them, and warmed himself.
The high priest asked Jesus about His disciples
and the things He was teaching.
[19] The high priest then asked Jesus of his disciples, and of his
doctrine.
Jesus answered, "I spoke out in the open. I also
taught in the synagogue and the temple where the Jews were. I haven't said
anything in secret. Why are you asking Me? Ask the people who heard Me what
I said. They know what I said."
[20] Jesus answered him, I spake openly to the world; I ever taught
in the synagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always resort; and in
secret have I said nothing.
[21] Why askest thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have said
unto them: behold, they know what I said.
When He said that, one the officers hit Jesus
with the palm of his hand. The officer said, "Why are you talking to the
high priest that way?"
[22] And when he had thus spoken, one of the officers which stood by
struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, Answerest thou the high
priest so?
Jesus answered, "If I have said anything bad,
tell Me what it was. But if I said the truth, why did you hit Me?"
[23] Jesus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the
evil: but if well, why smitest thou me?
Annas sent Jesus to the high priest,
Caiaphas. Jesus had his hands tied.
[24] Now Annas had sent him bound unto Caiaphas the high priest.
Simon Peter stood by the fire to get warm.
Someone said, "Aren't you one of His disciples?" Peter said, "I am not."
[25] And Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. They said therefore
unto him, Art not thou also one of his disciples? He denied it, and said, I
am not.
Peter cut off a man's ear in the garden. One of
the man's family members asked Peter, "Didn't I see you in the garden with
Him?"
[26] One of the servants of the high priest, being his kinsman whose
ear Peter cut off, saith, Did not I see thee in the garden with him?
Peter said no, and then immediately, the roster
crowed.
[27] Peter then denied again: and immediately the cock crew.
Jesus has a trial by Pontius Pilate.
Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the hall of
judgment. It was early in the morning. The Jews did not go into the
judgment hall. If they went into the judgment hall, they would not be clean.
They would not be able to eat the passover meal.
[28] Then led they Jesus from Caiaphas unto the hall of judgment: and
it was early; and they themselves went not into the judgment hall, lest they
should be defiled; but that they might eat the passover.

Pilate went out to them. He said, "What are you
accusing this man of doing?"
[29] Pilate then went out unto them, and said, What accusation bring
ye against this man?
They answered, "If He wasn't doing bad things,
we would not have brought Him to you."
[30] They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we
would not have delivered him up unto thee.
Pilate said to them, "Take Him away and judge Him by your laws." The
Jews said to Pilate, "The law does not let us kill anyone." This us
what Jesus said would happen about the way He would die.
[31] Then said Pilate unto them, Take ye him, and judge him according
to your law. The Jews therefore said unto him, It is not lawful for us to
put any man to death:
[32] That the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spake,
signifying what death he should die.
Pilate came into the judgment hall. He
said to Jesus, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus said, "Are you asking
me for yourself or did other people tell you this?"
[33] Then Pilate entered into the judgment hall again, and called
Jesus, and said unto him, Art thou the King of the Jews?
[34] Jesus answered him, Sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did
others tell it thee of me?
Pilate said, "Am I a Jew? Your own people and
the leaders of the priests have brought You to me. What have You done?"
[35] Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Thine own nation and the chief
priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou done?
Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not in this world. If My kingdom was part of
this world, my disciples would fight to keep Me from being arrested. But my
kingdom is not here now. "
[36] Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom
were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be
delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.
Pilate said to Him, "So, are you a king?" Jesus answered, "You said that I
am a king. This is why I was born. This is why I came into the world.
I came so I can tell the truth. Everyone who is part of the truth
knows what I am saying.
[37] Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus
answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this
cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.
Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.
Pilate said to Jesus, "What is truth?" After
Pilate said that, he went out to the Jews again. He said to them, "I can't find
anything wrong with Him. But, you have a custom. The custom is that on passover, I let one of your prisoners go. So, do you want me to let
the King of the Jews out of prison?"
[38] Pilate saith unto him, What is truth? And when he had said this,
he went out again unto the Jews, and saith unto them, I find in him no fault
at all.
[39] But ye have a custom, that I should release unto you one at the
passover: will ye therefore that I release unto you the King of the Jews?
All of the people yelled, "No, not this man. We
want you to let Barabbas go." Barrabas was a person who stole from
other people.
[40] Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas.
Now Barabbas was a robber.
