Needs in Lebanon
The Father Andeweg Institute for the Deaf
Beirut, Lebanon

The FAID was founded in 1957 by the late Father Andeweg with collaboration of the members of the Coast Lion's Club.  It is one of the most prominent deaf education centers in the Middle East. FAID has educated 2,700 deaf children (ages 2.5 - 18) through the 44 years of its operation.  They currently have 85 students.

The school is run on an oral basis and the students are encouraged to use speech at all times.  The children are taught to speak both Arabic and English.  This is achieved through the extensive use of  a Speech and Hearing Department. Other services provided to the community include:  Earmould Laboratory Audiology Services, Speech Therapy, and Out-Patient Programs.

The FAID has a large number of poor students who cannot afford tuition fees, transportation, hearing aids, etc.  They are requesting financial help for scholarships and hearing aids for these students.  The tuition fees for one year (includes boarding) is $1,500 (US Dollars).

In addition to deaf students, the FAID helps elderly poor deaf community members. They are requesting financial help to enable them to provide 6 hearing aids to elderly persons
