A New Face For Samira

Samira Paola Corato Provetti, age 3, of Brazil is the daughter of deaf parents, Paolo and Vanessa. A congenital malformation of her lower jaw made her dependent on a feeding tube. She also required a tracheotomy. She is in need of special surgery to correct the problem and enable her to have a normal life. Her father, Paolo, has been in a desperate search for help for his daughter. He has contacted Deaf Friends International and Workers For Jesus on many occasions pleading for our help. He and his wife wanted to bring Samira to the United States for special surgery that would enable her to breathe and eat normally. Upon investigation, we learned that having this surgery would cost the family more than $30,000. We added Samira to the List of Needs in the DFI Cares Program and told her father that all we could do was hope that someone might donate to help.

In the summer of 2002, we learned that a team from the organization, Operation Smile, would be about 6 hours from Samira's home in less than 2 weeks! Samira traveled to Belo Horizonte and was examined by the team. As a result, Dr. Nivaldo Alonso of Sao Paulo agreed to perform the needed surgeries on Samira free of charge.

Currently, we are trying to help make the final arrangements for the Provetti family to travel to Sao Paulo. It will be necessary for them to stay there for 2 months while Samira goes through her surgery and recuperation period.

March, 2003

Dr. Alonso has finished Samira’s first surgery. In the first week of March, her father sent photos of her wearing the medical device that will help lengthen her jaw. There will be more surgeries in the months ahead, but eventually Samira will be able to lead a normal life.

Many people have played a part in Samira’s story in the past few months: Zalira Silveira, Zalira’s family and friends, the Operation Smile team, Casa Hope in Sao Paulo, Dr. Alonso, and the Stryker Corporation.

The need for financial help continues. Samira and her parents will need to travel back and forth to Sao Paulo for her surgeries. They need help to pay for their travel expenses.

Um Novo Rosto para Samira

Samira Paola Corato Provetti, brasileira de 3 anos de idade, é filha de pais surdos, Paolo e Vanessa. um defeito congênito de seu maxilar inferior tornou-a dependente de uma sonda para alimentação. Ela precisou também de uma traqueotomia. Samira precisa de uma cirurgia especial que corrija o problema e possibilite a ela viver uma vida normal. Seu pai, Paolo, tem procurado desesperadamente por ajuda para sua filha. Ele entrou em contato com a Deaf Friends International e com Workers For Jesus em várias ocasiões pedindo nossa ajuda. Paolo e sua esposa queriam trazer Samira aos Estados Unidos para fazer a cirurgia especial que possibilitaria que ela respirasse e se alimentasse normalmente. Após alguma investigação, nós descobrimos que essa cirurgia custaria à família mais de $30.000 dólares. Nós incluímos Samira na Lista de Necessidades do Programa DFI Cares e dissemos a seu pai que tudo o que podíamos fazer era esperar que alguém pudesse fazer uma doação que pudesse ajudá-la.

No verão de 2002, nós ficamos sabendo que uma equipe da organização Operation Smile estaria a cerca de 6 horas da casa de Samira em menos de duas semanas! Samira viajou para Belo Horizonte e foi examinada pela equipe. Como resultado, o Dr. Nivaldo Alonso, de São Paulo, concordou em realizar as cirurgias necessárias a Samira gratuitamente.

Atualmente, estamos tentando ajudar a fazer os acertos finais para que a família Provetti possa viajar para São Paulo. Será necessário que eles fiquem em São Paulo por dois meses, enquanto Samira passa por sua cirurgia e período de recuperação.

Março de 2003

O Dr. Alonso terminou a primeira cirurgia de Samira. Na primeira semana de março, seu pai enviou fotos de Samira usando o dispositivo médico que ajudará a estender seu maxilar. Haverá mais cirurgias nos próximos meses, mas ao final delas, Samira poderá viver uma vida normal.

Muitas pessoas desempenharam um papel na história de Samira nos últimos meses: Zalira Silveira, a família e amigos de Zalira, a equipe da Operation Smile, a Casa Hope em São Paulo, o Dr. Alonso e a Stryker Corporation.

A necessidade de ajuda financeira ainda existe. Samira e seus pais precisarão viajar para São Paulo várias vezes para que Samira possa fazer suas cirurgias. Eles precisam de ajuda para pagar suas despesas de viagem.

Samira has an appointment in São Paulo (SP) on September 14 2003 and, on the next day, she will be examined by our dear Dr. Nivaldo's team. He was very important to us and especially for the transformation on Samira’s as well as our lives... but all this would not be possible without your SUPPORT, which was essential for it all to happen and to keep on going... Right now, Samira is fine, eating normally and by herself... she is already speaking (repeating everything she hears) and she is even singing... how marvelous!!!! She already talks about almost everything... We are very happy!!! Therefore I keep thanking you...

Olha, Samira tem retorno para São Paulo (SP) no dia 14/09/03, onde no dia seguinte, será examinada pela equipe do nosso querido amigo Dr. Nivaldo, que foi muito importante para nós e principalmente pela tranformação na vida de Samira e também de todos nós... mas, isso não seria possível sem o APOIO de vocês, que foi fundamental para que tudo isso fosse realizado e que continua indo em frente... Por isso, só tenho que sempre a AGRADECER a todos vocês que nos ajudaram e que DEUS abençoe para sempre a cada um de vocês. OBRIGADO!

No momento, Samira está bem, se alimentando normalmente e sozinha... já está falando (repetindo tudo que ouve) e está até cantando... que maravilha!!!! Ela já conversa quase tudo... Estamos muito felizes!!! Por isso agradeço sempre a vocês...
