Institute "Filippo Smaldone"

This institute is located in the District of Nyamirambo in Rwanda.  It aims at giving these young, handicapped children the necessary care and, above all, appropriate training permitting them, after a re-education in speech and hearing, to stand on their own and find their place in society.

The Institute welcomes 140 deaf children, boys and girls of which 90 are boarders and 50 are day scholars.  Many of the children are orphans, needy children, and survivors of war and the 1994 genocide.  The Institute is unable to accept all the deaf of the country for lack of means.  The cost of living is going up from day to day, which means the majority of parents are unable to contribute to the education of their children.  A lot of misery exists due to diseases like AIDS, malaria, meningitis, and malnutrition.  Due to lack of preventive measures and adequate therapy, there are many victims, especially amongst the weak, the children, and in particular the deaf, who are unable to communicate verbally and are often socially marginalized.

The Rehabilitation Centre "Filippo Smaldone" for the deaf is entrusted to the Salesian Sisters of the Sacred Hearts who administer the program without any economic help from the local authorities.
