An Introduction of School: -

Late Poet Shiromani Lekhnath Poudel is the well known name in the field of literature. Lekhnath Municipality is after the name of this famous poet where he was born. Lekhnath Municipality is a paradise of natural beauty and also known as the city of seven lakes. 600 meters North of Lekhnath Chowk, Shri Sirjana Residential Higher Secondary School for the Deaf is located within an area 0.30 hector of land. From school, one can have a panoramic view of Western Himalayan ranges such as Annapurna I, II, III, Fishtail and many others. The other natural gifts are greenery, flora & fountains, green pastures, lakes, caves, forests with mountainous vegetations etc. Besides all these glorious gifts of creation, human being without education means an incomplete journey of life. Therefore, education is most emphasized for a successful life to create an educated society which can only build a developed Nation. The process of education continues by birth till death. In our life, education is most important and valuable need. Education is necessary to build better human behaviors that make social, economical and political development. There is a big difference in the opportunity or access of education between hearing and deaf. So deaf by birth or hard of hearing or lost hearing later, education is possible through sign language only. Education helps to make their living easier. With an objective of deaf education, two educated deaf started a school from Primary Level with two teachers and seven students in 3rd December 1987 in Pokhara. With their commitments and hard work, they were able to bring in various National or International organizations, parents and individuals to bring this school from Nursery level to Lower Secondary Level and to Secondary Level. Today, this is the only school which provides Higher Secondary Level education to deaf in the country and region.

The educational condition of Nepal is poor and under such circumstances deaf schools are not found everywhere. There are few Primary deaf schools in the country and only two Secondary schools, one in Katmandu, the capital city of Nepal and other one is this Sirjana Residential Higher Secondary School for the Deaf. This school is the only one Higher Secondary school in Nepal where deaf people can get collage level education. Having equal capacity of learning like hearing, they are taught with the help of sign language. The course and textbooks are as like as in a school of the hearing, the only difference is teaching media. Deaf students come from different districts of the country to receive education in this school and they are taught using sign language. Nepali sign language is the focal mode of teaching. Providing equal opportunity of education to the deaf children is always a responsibility of a country but unfortunately it is not happening in Nepal. Nation should have provided an effective and special attention to such children which is not yet emphasized. Every Nation has the responsibility to educate all children who are the future idol of that country and for which education is necessary to achieve the goal of successful life. Therefore, starting of special educational Institutions is today's foremost need. The nature, character, hobby, status and capacity of deaf students are different from hearing students. Therefore such plans should be made accordingly after identifying their real need and problem.

This school has classes from Nursery to twelve. Besides this, tailoring and computer trainings are also available. Under the support program of Gandaki Association of the Deaf (GAD-Pokhara), it has its own school and hostel buildings. These infrastructures are provided by Deaf way-UK who works for the education and development of the deaf. 116 students have hostel facility and rest of the students attend their class by school bus. This bus is the contribution of Japanese Federation of the Deaf, Japan. Besides nominal salary support from the Government, GAD is providing additional salary for the teachers and other staffs. Under poor student scholarship program of GAD and Special Education department of the Government, 81 poor students are receiving education in this school.

Since its establishment in the year 1987, school is aiming for the wills and rights of the deaf education. During the operation of the school, it has to come through various challenges and opportunities. Bringing it to this day, the contribution of various institutions or associations and individuals will always remain as a pride. Its main mission is to provide access of education to every deaf child from rural and urban areas of Nepal. Sirjana Residential Higher Secondary School for the Deaf at Lekhnath – 3, Kaski, Nepal is completely a non profit making and socially oriented educational institution.
