CHRISTIANS AS SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMEN(WOMEN)
by Stan Griffin

A U.S. Congressman says it’s not possible to pass laws requiring that businessmen be honest and principled, but he believes they can be both "Christianlike" and successful.

Rob Portman of Ohio’s Second District was speaking to a group meeting in the basement of Hyde Park’s United Methodist Church (a Cincinnati suburb). Included in his speech were quotations from Scripture and several references to Enron and Adelphia Communications (companies who were allegedly guilty of questionable practices in their operations).

Portman described a "90s era of greed" when corporations would "do just about anything ... (to) get those stock prices up ..." He suggested changes that would help to stop future scandals such as more severe criminal penalties, a requirement for business students to do "significant" research in ethics, and legislating more complete public disclosure.
