The Bible Project - summary of 1 Corinthians
1 Corinthians was written to the church that was in Corinth.
Corinth was located in Greece. It was one of the largest and most important cities in Ancient Greece. Paul lived in Corinth for 18 months and founded the Christian church there. About 4 years later, Paul was in Ephesus in Turkey and wrote this letter to the church in Corinth. He wrote it in about the year 57 A.D. |

Paul wrote this letter because he had learned about some problems in the Corinthian church. The letter has 2 parts. 1. Paul rebukes the church for divisions and problems. He tells them how to deal with sin in the church. 2. Paul answers specific questions that people in the
Corinthian church have asked him. immoral behavior

1 Corinthians 1This letter is from Paul. Another Christian named Sosthenes is with Paul. Paul and Sosthenes are apostles of Jesus Christ through the will of God. He is writing to the church in Corinth. They are also believers in Jesus Christ along with all believers everywhere.[1] Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother, [2] Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: Paul writes: I pray for grace and peace for you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. [3] Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I always thank God on your behalf for the grace of God that is given to you by Jesus Christ. [4] I thank my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; You are blessed in all ways by Him, everything you say and everything you know. [5] That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; You know that my testimony of Christ was true. [6] Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: You are not missing out on anything while you wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to come back. He will know you are His and your sins will be washed away. [7] So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: [8] Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful. He called you into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, and you can trust Him. [9] God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord. The church that Paul started in Corinth is having problems. I am begging you, brothers, in our Lord Jesus Christ's name, to stop having disagreements and divisions among you. You should be joined together and agreeing on things. [10] Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. I have heard from people who are in the family with the woman named Chloe. They said that the people in your church are split and have different leaders. [11] For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. Some people say that they follow me (Paul), some people say they follow Apollos, some people say they follow Cephas (Peter), and others say they follow Christ. [12] Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas; and I of Christ. Is Christ divided? Was it me (Paul) who was crucified for you? Were you baptized in my name? [13] Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I only baptized two of you: Crispus and Gaius. If I had baptized more of you, some might say I was baptizing people in my own name. [14] I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; [15] Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. I also baptized the people in Stephanas' family. I'm not sure who else. [16] And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other. Christ did not send me to baptize people. He sent me to preach the gospel. It is not my words that saves. The power of God saves. If my words saved, the cross would have meant nothing. People who are not saved think the cross is foolish. But people who are saved know the cross is the power of God. [17] For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. [18] For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. The scriptures say, "I will destroy the wisdom of wise people. I will make smart people know nothing." [19] For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where are the wise people? Where are the educated people? Where are the people who argue? God has made these people foolish. [20] Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? God was wise, but the wisdom of the world does not save. God saved people when the people believed what sounded foolish in preaching. [21] For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. The Jews look for a sign, and the Greeks look for something wise. [22] For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach that Christ was crucified on a cross. The Jews don't believe this, and the Greeks think it's foolish. [23] But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; Christ has the power and wisdom of God for both Jews and Greeks But Christ has the power and wisdom of God for both Jews and Greeks. Any foolishness of God is wiser than any men. Any weakness of God is stronger than any men. [24] But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. [25] Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. You see this about yourselves. When you were called, people did not think you were wise or strong or royal like kings. But God chooses the foolish things of the world to confuse the wise people. God chooses the weak things to confuse the strong things. [26] For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: [27] But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; God chooses the lowest, hated things to do His work. He uses things that the world sees as nothing to destroy the things that God sees as nothing. No person should brag about themselves to God. [28] And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: [29] That no flesh should glory in his presence. But you are in Christ Jesus. God gives you wisdom, goodness, cleanness, and saving. Do what the scriptures say and glory in the Lord. [30] But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: [31] That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. 1 Corinthians 2The Holy Spririt gives words to say. When I first visited you, I did not use fancy words or act smart to tell you about God. I only wanted to tell you about Jesus Christ and how He was crucified. [1] And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. [2] For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. I was weak and felt very afraid. My words did not show any human wisdom. My words showed you the power of the Holy Spirit. I don't want your faith to come from the wise words of men. Your faith should come from the power of God. [3] And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. [4] And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: [5] That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Wisdom comes from faith in Christ. We use different, wise words to talk to people who have had faith longer. But, even those words are not from this world or the leaders of this world. The leaders of this world will soon disappear. We talk about the widsom God used to save us. His ways are a mystery to us. He planned to save us before the world began. [6] Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: [7] But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory: None of the leaders of this world knew about God's plan. If they had known it, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. [8] Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. The scriptures say that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no man has ever understood the things that God has prepared for people who love Him. [9] But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him. But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. The Spirit can see all of the deep things of God. [10] But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God. How does one man know about what another man is thinking? He only knows what is inside his own mind and heart. In the same way, man cannot know what is in God's mind or heart. Only God's Spirit can know that. [11] For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have God's spirit. We don't have the spirit of the world We have God's spirit so that we know the things that God has freely given to us. [12] Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. We say things that the Holy Spirit has taught us, not the things that the world has taught us. The Holy Spirit teaches spiritual things to spiritual people. [13] Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. Men who do not have God's spirit do not understand the things of God. They think it is all foolishness. The man who has God's spirit understands the things of God. He can judge people who don't have God's spirit, but he cannot be judged by them. [14] But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. [15] But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man. Who has known the mind of the Lord or can tell Him what to do? But, we have the mind of Christ. [16] For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 3The Corinithians are takings sides with their leaders. Brothers, I could not talk to you like mature Christians. I had to talk to you more simply because you are babies in Christ. Your faith is new. I have given you milk and not solid food. You weren't ready for solid food, and you still aren't. [1] And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ. [2] I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
You are still living like the world. You are jealous of each other and arguing. You are divided. Isn't that like people in the world who do not follow Christ? [3] For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? When you take sides and some say they follow Paul and others say they follow Apollos, aren't you acting like people who are not Christians? [4] For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? Apollos and I are only the ministers of God. God is who you believe in. I planted the seeds of your faith in God. Apollos watered the seeds. But God made the seeds grow. [5] Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? [6] I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. Neither the planter or the person who watered made the seeds grow. God is who made the seeds grow. [7] So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. The man who plants and the man who waters are equal. Each person will be paid for what he does. [8] Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. We are all workers with God. We help God build His house of believers. [9] For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. God gives wisdom to build church foundations. The grace of God has given me wisdom to build. I have built the first part (the foundation) of the church. Someone else added to it and made the church bigger. Everyone should pay attention to what he does to keep building the church. [10] According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. All churches are made on the foundation of Jesus Christ. No one can build that foundation other than Jesus Christ. [11] For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. On the Day of Judgment, all will see the foundations. If the foundations are not Jesus, if they are gold, silver, valuable stones, wood, hay, or grass, they will burn up. [12] Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; [13] Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's foundation does not burn up, he will receive a reward. [14] If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's foundation burns up, he will lose. But he himself will be saved, and he will not burn up. [15] If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Don't you know that you God's temple and that God's spirit lives in you? [16] Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man makes God's temple dirty, God will destroy him. God's temple is holy, and you are God's temple. [17] If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. Don't be fooled. If anyone of you seems wise in this world, he will have to become foolish so that he can become truly wise. [18] Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. The wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. The scriptures say, "God knows when people think they are more wise than God." [19] For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. Also, God knows that the things wise men think mean nothing. [20] And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. So, no person should worship other people. Everything is God's. Paul, Apollos, Cephas, the world, life, death, things now, things in the future -- everything is for you. And you are Christ's, and Christ is God's. [21] Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; [22] Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; [23] And ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's.
